Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional braces because it can straighten somewhat crooked or gapped teeth without metal brackets. That said, there are a few things you need to know to keep them in prime condition to continue to enjoy the many advantages they provide. Keep reading to learn a few dos and don’ts of having Invisalign.

DO Clean Invisalign Daily

Because toxic bacteria love to thrive in the space between your clear aligners and your gums, they can develop plaque buildup that can tint them yellow. It defeats the purpose of having invisible orthodontics if they start to look less than pleasing. To avoid this, remember to take them out and clean them twice daily along with brushing and flossing as part of your daily dental hygiene routine.

DO Remove Invisalign for Meals

Another way to keep your Invisalign crystal clear is to take your aligners out when you eat or drink and then reinsert them when you’re done. Otherwise, there are ingredients in the foods you eat and the beverages you consume that can stain them. Plus, food particles could get stuck and remain in them which attracts toxic bacteria.

DON’T Use Tobacco

Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco can damage and discolor your aligners, too. It can also cause them to develop an unpleasant odor that gives you bad breath. Not only that, but these products are also bad for your oral health. You’re more likely to develop tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer and if the infection enters your bloodstream it can contribute to heart disease and diabetes. Try to leave this addictive habit in the past to keep your Invisalign, and your dental well-being, in good shape.

DON’T Use Abrasive Substances

It’s tempting to think that strong cleaners like bleach can keep your aligners from developing any buildup but abrasive ingredients like bleach are sure to harm them, instead. It can degrade the plastic which can cause them to warp, crack, or break. You don’t want to have to order replacements from your dentist, so only use materials meant to clean them, like Invisalign Cleaning Crystals.

DON’T Leave Them Out

Anytime your aligners aren’t in your mouth, they should be in their proper storage case. If you leave them out in the open air then they’ll dry out which attracts unwanted microbes, or you could accidentally drop or lose them. Even if you’re taking them out temporarily for meals, be sure they’re in their carrier so you don’t accidentally throw them out with your dirty napkin!
